When you hear ‘date’ all you think about is the one which involves going out with cute guys/gals but not the one which we eat. Dates are perfection in one single bite, still thinking about cute guys/gals huh? Located at The Walk of Dubai’s JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) this Bateel is brightly lit with bare floor and a modern clean feel. A flagship store, it has everything, a dates boutique, bakery and a cafe all under one roof. You are seduced into the world of dates, which for most people is just a mundane piece of dried fruit. With the hustle and bustle of JBR outside gives the place a lively feel.
This was my second visit to Bateel (another location previously) after a year but I am still impressed by their congenial hospitality. After drooling over the glistening cases of pastries and towering baskets of bread, I settle and look at the seasonal menu. It features dishes which are light, green and made with fresh ingredients. As my eye catches ‘green burrata’ I make up my mind and move to the regular menu which features items for brunch to desserts and coffee. It consist of classic Umbrian Italian fare which gets a fresh mediterranean overhaul, some of the main dishes include lamb shoulder with ras-al-hanout spice and salmon with the popular za’atar spice.
First bite of date walnut loaf slice, dipped in 7 year aged date; yes date balsamic and I was thinking, I do not want dinner instead just pack me a loaf with bottle of oil and vinegar. Date balsamic is something my mind or rather my taste buds will remember forever, well at least till i can get hold of that bottle.
With the first bite of my green burrata salad I knew I was missing something in my life. Perfectly cooked fava beans and asparagus with hearts of artichoke swooshed with some extra virgin olive oil and lemon confit. It blowed my mind with every bite but the star of the dish creamy burrata was melt-in mouth; deliciousness overload. Lemon confit gave fresh vegetables equipoise, a perfect complement to spring weather.
Cream of mushroom was like grandma’s old hat and needed some kind of elevation with presentation and texture, definitely not the best looking soup. Other than these ripples in cream of mushroom, it tasted just about right for mushroom lovers.
Prawn Castellane a shell shaped pasta was nothing less than a stellar dish. Creamy tomato soup with a hint of cilantro, which was a complete surprise and melt in mouth delicious. Pasta was cooked to perfection and the ridges in shells could hold some sauce giving you a mouthful of flavor explosion. Creamy tomato sauce had a perfect balance of tang and mild sweetness.
Classic french dessert Opera Cake but with a creamy date layer and I was like now you are talking my language. Made with a sniper’s accuracy the dessert looked stunning, clean and a perfect end to dinner. After adoring it for a while I took a bite and only word to describe it is divine. Almond cake was soft and the layers of Khidri date cream made it very unusual yet noteworthy combination with chocolate.
Qahwa aka Arabic coffee served with Rhutab dates was bewitching and totally irresistible. Rhutab dates is not the type but instead a semi ripe stage of dates, always served cold. Qahwa is made from lightly roasted coffee with green cardamom. Cardamom adds a cache of exoticsm and tastes nothing like a good old cup of Joe. Served in traditional pot with tiny cups, I have had so much qahwa after it that I could possibly drown in it. Well that said I am addicted to it and went looking for a qahwa pot in every shop I could in Dubai!
